FAQ
What is Oceania?
Oceania is the region of Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific islands, traditionally divided into Australasia, Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia.
Is Hawaii part of Oceania?
Geographically and culturally Hawaii is part of Polynesia, but politically it is a US state. We cover it as a neighbouring region and stopover.
Do I need travel insurance?
It is strongly recommended. Medical evacuation from remote islands can be extremely expensive.
Which currency should I bring?
Each country has its own currency (AUD, NZD, FJD, XPF and more). Cards are widely accepted in Australia and New Zealand; carry cash on smaller islands.
Are the Pacific islands safe?
Most Pacific destinations are very safe for visitors. Follow local advice on ocean conditions, cyclones and, in a few places, current travel advisories.
Can I use my phone?
Yes. A travel eSIM is the easiest way to get data in Australia, New Zealand and many islands. Coverage is limited on outer islands.
What plug type is used?
Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Cook Islands, Vanuatu and PNG mostly use Type I (angled pins). French territories use European Type C/E.
Can I drink tap water?
Tap water is safe in Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii and most resorts; on many smaller islands, drink bottled, boiled or filtered water.
