Travel essentials

The short checklist we use before every trip to Australia, New Zealand or the islands.

Oceania is far from almost everywhere, so a little planning saves a lot of money. Book long-haul flights first, then island accommodation (rooms on small islands are limited), then the rest.

1. Flights

Major hubs are Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Auckland, Nadi, Papeete and Honolulu. Flexible dates and open-jaw tickets (into one city, out of another) often beat simple returns. See cheap flights to Oceania.

2. Accommodation

From city hotels to overwater bungalows and beach fales. Use free-cancellation rates to lock in island stays early. More on our hotels page.

3. Getting around

Car hire is the best way to see New Zealand, Tasmania and much of Australia. For trains, coaches and some ferries, compare routes before you go. See car hire and transport.

4. Stay connected

An eSIM gives you data on landing in Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and other countries. Coverage on outer islands can be patchy. Read our eSIM guide.

5. Tours and experiences

Reef trips, Hobbiton, Milford Sound cruises and whale swims sell out in peak season. Book key experiences ahead.

6. Paperwork

  • Australia: ETA or eVisitor for most visitors.
  • New Zealand: NZeTA plus the International Visitor Levy for visa-waiver travellers.
  • Pacific islands: many offer visa-free entry or visas on arrival; check each country's official site.
  • Travel insurance: strongly recommended, especially for remote islands where medical evacuation is expensive.
