A rental car is the best way to explore New Zealand, Tasmania, the Great Ocean Road and Queensland's coast. On larger Pacific islands such as Viti Levu, Upolu, Rarotonga and Tahiti, a car or scooter gives you freedom to find quiet beaches.

Driving rules to know
- Drive on the left in Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Cook Islands and PNG; on the right in French Polynesia, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Hawaii and Easter Island.
- Carry your licence and an International Driving Permit if it isn't in English.
- Distances in Australia are vast: watch for wildlife at dawn and dusk, and avoid driving outback roads at night.
- Many rental agreements prohibit unsealed roads; read the terms.
- The Cook Islands may require a local licence for scooters; check on arrival.
Saving money
- Book early for December–February.
- One-way fees (e.g. Christchurch to Queenstown) vary a lot between suppliers.
