The South Island of New Zealand was made for road trips. Distances are modest, traffic is light, and in a single day you can drive from turquoise glacial lakes to rainforest-cloaked coast. This 10 to 14 day loop starts and ends in Christchurch and takes in Lake Tekapo, Aoraki/Mount Cook, Wanaka, Queenstown, Milford Sound and the wild West Coast, with an optional northern extension for Abel Tasman and Kaikoura.
Before you set off
Most visitors who do not need a visa must hold a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) before traveling. It costs NZD 17 through the official app or NZD 23 on the immigration website, and most travelers also pay the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) of NZD 100 at the same time. Australians are exempt from both the NZeTA and the levy. Apply through official channels only.
New Zealanders drive on the left. Roads are mostly two lanes, often winding, with one-lane bridges where you give way according to the signs. Google Maps times tend to be optimistic, so add 20 to 30 percent and stop often. You can drive on a valid overseas license in English for up to 12 months; otherwise carry an International Driving Permit or an approved translation.
Car or campervan? A campervan saves on accommodation and lets you wake up beside a lake, but freedom camping is only permitted in certified self-contained vehicles and only where local rules allow. A car plus motels or holiday parks is easier for couples who want a proper bed. Compare car hire rates early for summer, and watch for one-way fees if you finish in a different city.

Days 1-4: Canterbury and the Southern Alps
Pick up your vehicle in Christchurch and spend the first day recovering from the flight. The Botanic Gardens and the rebuilt city center are pleasant for a gentle wander.
Head southwest across the Canterbury Plains to Lake Tekapo, whose milky-blue color comes from glacial rock flour. The small Church of the Good Shepherd on the shore is the classic photo, and in late November and December the roadside lupins bloom. Tekapo sits within the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, so book a stargazing tour or simply step outside after dark.
Drive past Lake Pukaki, even bluer, to Aoraki/Mount Cook Village. The Hooker Valley Track, about 10 kilometers return and roughly three hours on easy gravel and swing bridges, ends at a glacier lake facing New Zealand's highest peak. Go early or late in the day for fewer people and softer light. Then cross the Lindis Pass to Wanaka, a lakeside town with a slower pace than Queenstown.
Days 5-8: Queenstown, Fiordland and Milford Sound
From Wanaka, take the Crown Range Road over the Cardrona Valley to Queenstown, New Zealand's adventure capital. Spend two nights doing as much or as little as you like: bungy jumping at the Kawarau Bridge, jet boating on the Shotover River, riding the gondola up Bob's Peak, or touring the Gibbston Valley wineries. Arrowtown, 20 minutes away, has a gold-rush main street that glows in autumn.
Continue to Te Anau, the gateway to Fiordland National Park. Staying here rather than in Queenstown cuts the Milford Sound drive from around eight hours return to about four.
The Milford Road is a destination in itself: Mirror Lakes, the Eglinton Valley and the Homer Tunnel are all worth stopping for. At Milford, a two-hour cruise takes you past Mitre Peak and waterfalls to the Tasman Sea. Rain only makes it better, as hundreds of temporary waterfalls appear. There is no fuel at Milford, so fill up in Te Anau. Between roughly May and November, carry snow chains and check road conditions, as avalanche closures can occur. Book cruises and other tours in advance in summer.

Days 9-13: The West Coast
Retrace your route north to Wanaka, then cross the Haast Pass to the West Coast. The road passes the Blue Pools, a short walk to clear glacial water, and Thunder Creek Falls before dropping into rainforest.
At Franz Josef or Fox Glacier, the glaciers have retreated significantly and can no longer be walked onto from the valley floor. Valley walks lead to viewpoints, but a heli-hike or scenic flight is the way to stand on the ice. Lake Matheson near Fox offers mirror reflections of Aoraki on still mornings. Weather here changes quickly, so keep a flexible day in hand.
Drive north through Hokitika, known for pounamu (greenstone) carving, to Punakaiki and its layered Pancake Rocks and blowholes, best at high tide. Then cut back across the Southern Alps via Arthur's Pass, a spectacular alpine highway where kea, the cheeky mountain parrots, often appear. Do not feed them.
Extending to the top of the South
With extra days, head north from Punakaiki to Nelson and Abel Tasman National Park for golden beaches, kayaking and the Coast Track, then return to Christchurch via Kaikoura for whale watching and seals. This adds three to four days. If you are arriving from the North Island, the Interislander and Bluebridge ferries cross from Wellington to Picton in about three and a half hours; check your rental company's policy on taking vehicles across. Our North Island itinerary pairs neatly with this route.

Where to stay and what it costs
Holiday parks, motels and lodges cover every budget. In peak summer (December to February), book hotels and campsites in Tekapo, Mount Cook Village and Te Anau well in advance, as supply is limited.
- Car hire: roughly NZD 60-150 per day, more in summer.
- Campervan: roughly NZD 120-350 per day, plus campsite fees.
- Motels: roughly NZD 150-280 per night for a double.
- Fuel: budget generously; prices are higher in remote areas.
When to go
December to March brings long days and the warmest weather, but also the most visitors. February and March are often the most settled months. Autumn (April and May) is cooler and quieter with golden colors around Queenstown and Arrowtown. Winter suits skiers, while spring brings lambs, waterfalls and some trail closures. Note that the popular Roys Peak Track near Wanaka closes from 1 October to 10 November for lambing.

Frequently asked questions
Is 10 days enough for the South Island?
Ten days covers the core loop of Tekapo, Mount Cook, Queenstown, Milford Sound and the West Coast at a brisk pace. Fourteen days allows rest days and weather buffers, or an Abel Tasman extension.
Is it better to rent a campervan or a car?
A campervan offers flexibility and saves on lodging, but freedom camping is limited to certified self-contained vehicles in permitted areas. A car with motels is simpler and often more comfortable.
Should I visit Milford Sound from Queenstown or Te Anau?
Te Anau is far closer, about two hours each way versus four from Queenstown. Staying a night there makes the day relaxed and leaves time for stops on the Milford Road.
What do I need to enter New Zealand?
Most visa-waiver travelers need an NZeTA (NZD 17 via app or NZD 23 online) and pay the NZD 100 International Visitor Levy. Australian citizens are exempt.
