Few regions do romance like Oceania. Overwater bungalows above turquoise lagoons, private-island resorts, fiords, wine country and empty white-sand beaches all sit within a few hours' flight of each other. Whether you want total seclusion, adventure for two or a mix of both, this guide compares the best honeymoon destinations in Oceania and its neighbors for 2026, with the best months to go and rough costs.

Costs are rough ranges for accommodation only and vary widely by season and resort. Our Oceania budget guide covers daily spending in more detail.

1. Bora Bora and Moorea, French Polynesia

The Bora Bora lagoon, with Mount Otemanu rising above it, is the classic honeymoon image, and the island's overwater bungalows remain the most sought-after in the world. Expect breakfast delivered by canoe, snorkeling with rays and reef sharks, and sunset cruises. It is also among the most expensive places in the Pacific.

Pair Bora Bora with Moorea, a short ferry ride from Tahiti, for lush mountains, hiking and somewhat lower prices. For something more exclusive still, Tetiaroa, the private atoll once owned by Marlon Brando, is home to an ultra-luxury eco-resort. See our French Polynesia guide.

2. Fiji's Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands

Fiji offers the widest choice of honeymoon resorts in the South Pacific, from barefoot boutique hideaways to private-island retreats. The Mamanuca Islands are close to Nadi airport, with adults-only resorts and some of the country's only overwater bures. The Yasawa Islands to the north feel more remote, with dramatic volcanic scenery and limestone caves to swim in. Fijian warmth and hospitality are a big part of the appeal, and prices are generally lower than in Tahiti.

3. Aitutaki, Cook Islands

The Aitutaki Lagoon rivals Bora Bora for color and is far quieter. Take a lagoon cruise to One Foot Island, snorkel among giant clams and stay in a beachfront or overwater villa. Combine a few nights on Rarotonga, which has a relaxed island lifestyle and good restaurants, with four or five on Aitutaki. See our Cook Islands guide.

4. The Whitsundays and Tropical North Queensland, Australia

The Whitsundays combine island resorts with the Great Barrier Reef. Whitehaven Beach's pure silica sand is a highlight, and a scenic flight over Heart Reef makes a memorable splurge. Further north, Port Douglas offers boutique stays between the reef and the Daintree Rainforest. Visit outside the stinger season (roughly November to May) if you want to swim without a stinger suit, or be prepared to wear one.

5. Queenstown and New Zealand's South Island

For couples who would rather hike, ski or road-trip than lie on a beach, Queenstown is hard to beat. Spend days on jet boats, bungy jumps or winery tours in Central Otago, then drive to Te Anau for a cruise on Milford Sound, or stay in a lodge near Aoraki/Mount Cook for stargazing in the dark sky reserve. Luxury lodges here are some of the finest in the world. See our New Zealand guide.

6. Isle of Pines, New Caledonia

The Isle of Pines is famous for its tall columnar pines, powder-white beaches and the natural pool at Oro Bay. It combines Melanesian culture with French food and wine, and it is quieter than most honeymoon hotspots. Fly or take the ferry from Nouméa. See our New Caledonia guide.

7. Samoa

Samoa suits couples who want a more authentic and affordable honeymoon. Swim in the To Sua Ocean Trench, stay in a beach fale and explore waterfalls and blowholes on Savai'i. Resorts are smaller and more personal than in Fiji or Tahiti.

8. Palau, for diving couples

If you both dive or snorkel, Palau is one of the world's great underwater destinations. Kayak and snorkel among the mushroom-shaped Rock Islands, swim in Jellyfish Lake when it is open, and dive walls and channels famous for sharks and manta rays. Accommodation is mostly around Koror, with a few upscale options.

A sample 12-night honeymoon

  1. Nights 1–4: Queenstown, with a day trip to Milford Sound and a winery lunch.
  2. Night 5: Fly to Auckland and overnight near the airport.
  3. Nights 6–7: Rarotonga, to slow down and adjust to island time.
  4. Nights 8–12: Aitutaki, in a beachfront or overwater villa on the lagoon.

Swap the Cook Islands for Fiji or Tahiti depending on budget and flight schedules.

Beyond Oceania

Two neighbors also deserve a mention. Hawaii offers luxury resorts, volcanoes and easy access from North America, and it pairs well with Tahiti; see our guide to combining Hawaii with the South Pacific. Bali is excellent value for private pool villas in Ubud or clifftop resorts near Uluwatu Temple; read our Bali stopover guide.

Planning tips for honeymooners

  • Mention your honeymoon when booking. Many resorts offer honeymoon packages or extras, such as a bottle of sparkling wine or a spa credit, often requiring a marriage certificate dated within the past year.
  • Watch the season. The South Pacific's cyclone season runs roughly November to April. You can still travel then, but consider travel insurance and flexible bookings. Our best time to visit guide has month-by-month advice.
  • Mix it up. Combining an adventure stop like Queenstown with a beach finish in Fiji or the Cook Islands balances activity and rest. Our getting around guide shows how the flights connect.
  • Book overwater villas early. The best-located bungalows sell out months in advance in peak season.
  • Pack light. Small planes have strict baggage limits; see our packing list.
