For many travelers in Australia, Bali is the easiest overseas escape: direct flights from every major city, a different culture, and a wide range of places to stay. It also works well as a stopover on a longer trip, whether you are heading to or from Europe and Asia, or adding a few days of temples and rice terraces to an Oceania itinerary. Bali is not part of Oceania, but it sits right next door, and this guide covers how to fit it in for 2026.
Flights from Australia
Direct flights to Denpasar (DPS) leave from Perth, Darwin, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and several other cities, operated by a mix of full-service and low-cost carriers including Qantas, Virgin Australia, Jetstar, Garuda Indonesia, Batik Air and Indonesia AirAsia.
| From | Approximate flight time |
|---|---|
| Darwin | about 2.5 hours |
| Perth | about 3.5 hours |
| Adelaide | about 5 hours |
| Brisbane | about 6 hours |
| Sydney and Melbourne | about 6–6.5 hours |
Fares spike during Australian school holidays, especially in July and over Christmas. Midweek departures outside those periods are usually much cheaper. Compare options on our flights page.

Entry requirements in 2026
Australians and most other Western visitors need three things before or on arrival in Bali. Rules change regularly, so confirm the details with official sources shortly before you travel.
- Visa on Arrival (VoA or e-VOA): valid for 30 days and extendable once for another 30. It has cost IDR 500,000 (roughly AUD 45–50), but Indonesia announced a fee increase in 2026, so check the current price. Applying online in advance avoids queues at the airport.
- All Indonesia arrival card: a free digital form combining immigration, customs and health declarations, submitted within 72 hours before arrival. You will get a QR code to show on landing.
- Bali tourist levy: IDR 150,000 per person (roughly AUD 15), paid once per visit through the official Love Bali website or app, or at the airport.
Your passport should have at least six months' validity, and you will need proof of onward or return travel.
Where to stay
Bali's regions feel very different, so choose your base based on the kind of stopover you want.
- Seminyak and Canggu: beach clubs, cafes, surf and nightlife. Traffic can be heavy.
- Uluwatu and the Bukit Peninsula: clifftop views, surf breaks and some of the island's best sunsets, close to Uluwatu Temple.
- Ubud: the cultural heart, with rice terraces, yoga, galleries and jungle villas.
- Sanur and Nusa Dua: calmer, family-friendly beaches with large resorts and easy airport access.
- Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan: islands a short fast boat ride away, known for dramatic cliffs and snorkeling with manta rays.

Sample stopover plans
| Length | Suggested plan |
|---|---|
| 2–3 nights | Stay in Uluwatu or Seminyak. Spend a day at the beach, see the Kecak fire dance at Uluwatu Temple at sunset, and add a spa treatment. |
| 4–5 nights | Two nights by the beach, then two or three in Ubud for the Tegallalang rice terraces, the Sacred Monkey Forest and a cooking class. |
| 7 nights | Beach, Ubud, plus two nights on Nusa Lembongan or Nusa Penida, or a sunrise hike up Mount Batur. |
Distances look short on the map, but traffic is slow. Ubud to Uluwatu can take two hours or more, so avoid changing hotels every night.
Uluwatu Temple and other highlights
Uluwatu Temple (Pura Luhur Uluwatu) is perched on a cliff above the Indian Ocean on Bali's southern tip. Arrive in the late afternoon to walk the clifftop paths, then stay for the Kecak dance performed at sunset. Sarongs are provided for visitors, and the resident monkeys are notorious for grabbing sunglasses and phones, so keep valuables secured.
Other highlights include Tanah Lot sea temple, the water temple of Tirta Empul, the Jatiluwih rice terraces, and diving or snorkeling around Amed and Menjangan. Browse tours for guided day trips, which save you from navigating traffic yourself.

When to go
The dry season, roughly April to October, brings the most reliable weather and is peak season, especially July and August. The wet season, roughly November to March, brings afternoon downpours, humidity and lower prices. Plan around Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence in March (dates vary each year), when the whole island, including the airport, shuts down for 24 hours. See our best time to visit guide for more.
What a Bali stopover costs
Bali remains good value compared with most of Oceania, though prices in popular areas have risen. As a rough guide per person per day, excluding flights:
- Budget: roughly AUD 50–90 for a guesthouse room, local warung meals and ride-hailing.
- Mid-range: roughly AUD 120–250 for a boutique hotel or villa with a pool, restaurant meals and a day tour.
- Luxury: AUD 400 or more for clifftop resorts in Uluwatu or jungle retreats near Ubud, with private drivers and spa treatments.
Private villas shared between friends or families can be surprisingly affordable per person.
Practical tips
- Getting around: use hotel drivers, private drivers hired by the day, or ride-hailing apps like Grab and Gojek. Renting a scooter requires a license with a motorcycle endorsement and an International Driving Permit; accidents are common and insurance often will not cover unlicensed riders.
- Money: the currency is the Indonesian rupiah (IDR). Cards are widely accepted in tourist areas, but carry cash for small warungs and temple donations. Use ATMs attached to banks.
- Health: drink bottled or filtered water, and be cautious with ice at street stalls. Rabies is present in Bali, so avoid touching dogs and monkeys, and talk to your doctor about vaccinations before you go.
- Respect: cover shoulders and knees at temples, do not step on offerings on the ground, and follow local rules on behavior at sacred sites.
- Connectivity: eSIMs work well, and tourist SIMs are inexpensive. See our eSIM guide.
Combining Bali with Oceania
Bali pairs naturally with Western Australia or the Northern Territory: fly Perth–Denpasar–Darwin and continue to Kakadu, or loop back to the east coast for the Great Barrier Reef. Travelers heading on to the South Pacific usually route back through an Australian hub. Our guide to getting around Oceania explains the main connections, and the budget guide helps you compare costs with destinations like Fiji. Bali also features among the warm-weather options in our honeymoon guide.
