Hawaii sits in the North Pacific, a long way from the rest of Polynesia, yet it shares deep cultural roots with Tahiti, the Cook Islands and Samoa. Honolulu is also one of the best gateways to the South Pacific for travelers from North America. With a little planning, you can combine Hawaiian volcanoes and beaches with the lagoons of French Polynesia, Fiji or the Cook Islands in a single trip. This guide covers routes, timing and sample itineraries for 2026.

Why combine Hawaii with the South Pacific?

  • Shorter legs: breaking a long journey from the US mainland in Honolulu turns one very long day into two manageable flights.
  • Contrast: Hawaii offers big-island adventure, hiking and US-style convenience; the South Pacific islands are quieter, smaller and more traditional.
  • Cultural links: Hawaiian, Tahitian and Cook Islands Māori languages and voyaging traditions are closely related, which makes a trip across Polynesia especially rewarding.

Direct flights from Honolulu

Honolulu (HNL) has a handful of direct routes south. Most run only once or twice a week, so the schedule will shape your itinerary. Hawaiian Airlines is now part of Alaska Airlines, and some routes are sold under Alaska flight numbers.

RouteAirlineApproximate flight timeTypical frequency
Honolulu–Papeete (Tahiti)Hawaiian/Alaska Airlinesabout 5.5 hoursabout 1–2 per week
Honolulu–Rarotonga (Cook Islands)Hawaiian/Alaska Airlinesabout 6 hoursweekly
Honolulu–Nadi (Fiji)Fiji Airwaysabout 6.5–7 hoursweekly, some via Apia
Honolulu–Pago Pago (American Samoa)Hawaiian/Alaska Airlinesabout 5.5 hourslimited; check schedule
Honolulu–Auckland (New Zealand)Air New Zealand, Hawaiian/Alaskaabout 8.5–9 hoursseveral per week

Schedules change by season, so check current timetables before you lock in hotels. Flights from Honolulu to Fiji cross the International Date Line, so you arrive a calendar day later than you might expect; flights to Tahiti and Rarotonga stay on the same side of the line and the same day.

Option 1: Hawaii and Tahiti

This is the classic pairing, especially for honeymooners. Spend time on Maui or the Big Island, then fly Honolulu to Papeete and continue to Moorea by ferry and to the Bora Bora lagoon with Air Tahiti. If you have more time, add Huahine, Raiatea or the Tuamotu atolls for diving. Air Tahiti Nui also flies from Papeete to Los Angeles, so you can fly home directly rather than doubling back through Hawaii.

Option 2: Hawaii and the Cook Islands

The weekly Honolulu–Rarotonga flight makes the Cook Islands one of the easiest South Pacific add-ons from Hawaii. Rarotonga is small enough to circle by bus in about an hour, and the 50-minute flight to Aitutaki brings you to the Aitutaki Lagoon, one of the most beautiful in the Pacific. Because the flight is weekly, a one-week Cook Islands stay fits neatly. Air Rarotonga and Air Tahiti also link Rarotonga and Papeete, allowing a three-way Hawaii–Cooks–Tahiti loop on some schedules.

Option 3: Hawaii and Fiji

Fiji Airways' Honolulu–Nadi service connects Hawaii with Fiji's resort islands. From Nadi, catamarans reach the Mamanuca Islands in about an hour, and the Yasawa Islands are a scenic ferry ride further north. Fiji is also the best base for continuing to Samoa, Tonga or Vanuatu. Fiji Airways flies from Nadi to several US cities, making an open-jaw trip possible.

Hawaii highlights to include

On Maui, the sunrise at Haleakalā is unforgettable, but you need an advance reservation for sunrise entry, released through the national park booking system, and it can be very cold at the summit. The Big Island offers Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park and Mauna Kea stargazing; Kauai has the Nā Pali Coast and Waimea Canyon; and Oahu combines Honolulu, Waikīkī and the North Shore. How to book the route

There are three common ways to structure the trip:

  1. Round trip via Honolulu: fly from the mainland to Honolulu, then book a separate round trip to the South Pacific. Simple, but you will retrace your steps and may need an extra night in Honolulu to line up with weekly flights.
  2. Open-jaw: fly into Honolulu and home from Papeete or Nadi. Air Tahiti Nui and Fiji Airways both serve the US mainland, so this often saves a full travel day.
  3. Multi-city ticket: book the whole route on one ticket where possible. If your first flight is delayed and you miss a weekly connection, a single booking gives you more protection.

Whichever you choose, plan at least one buffer night in Honolulu before a weekly South Pacific flight, so a mainland delay does not cost you a week of your trip.

Timing and practicalities

  • Seasons: Hawaii is warm all year. The South Pacific's dry season runs roughly May to October, while November to April is warmer, wetter and cyclone season. Check our best time to visit guide.
  • Entry rules: Hawaii follows US entry rules, so visa-waiver travelers need an approved ESTA. French Polynesia, the Cook Islands and Fiji have their own entry requirements; many Western passport holders can visit visa-free for short stays, but confirm before booking.
  • Costs: Hawaii raised its state accommodation tax to 11 percent in 2026 (the so-called Green Fee), and county taxes and resort fees come on top. Tahiti and Bora Bora are also among the most expensive places in the Pacific. Our Oceania budget guide has rough daily costs.
  • Driving: Hawaii and French Polynesia drive on the right; Fiji and the Cook Islands drive on the left. Our getting around guide has car hire tips.
  • Sunscreen: Hawaii bans the sale of sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate, and reef-safe sunscreen is a good idea everywhere on this route. See our packing list.

Going further

With extra time, continue from the South Pacific to New Zealand via Auckland, or, for a truly remote add-on, look at Easter Island, the eastern corner of the Polynesian Triangle. Honeymooners should also read our guide to Oceania honeymoon destinations.
