Vanuatu is an archipelago of more than 80 islands with a reputation for adventure, and its headline act is Mount Yasur on Tanna, often called the world's most accessible active volcano. A 4WD takes you across an ash plain almost to the summit, and a short walk brings you to the crater rim, where explosions throw glowing lava into the air every few minutes. Add the capital island of Efate and the beaches and wrecks of Espiritu Santo, and you have one of the most varied trips in the South Pacific.
Mount Yasur: what to expect
Yasur is a scoria cone about 361 meters high at the southeastern end of Tanna. It has been erupting more or less continuously for centuries; Captain Cook noted its glow in 1774. Activity is strombolian: frequent bursts of gas, ash and lava bombs from vents inside a crater roughly 400 meters wide. Each explosion arrives with a deep boom you feel in your chest.
Visits are almost always made in the late afternoon so you see the crater in daylight, then stay as darkness falls and the lava glow takes over. The standard tour includes a custom welcome ceremony by the landholding community, a short drive up the slopes and about 10 to 15 minutes of walking on loose volcanic sand to the viewing area. Expect to spend an hour or so at the rim.
Alert levels and safety
The Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-Hazards Department monitors Yasur on a scale of 0 to 5. The volcano has been at Level 2, "major unrest", since October 2016, and that was still the case in October 2026. At Level 2, guided visits to designated viewing areas generally go ahead, but the department maintains a danger zone around the active vents, and lava bombs can and do land near the rim. If the level rises to 3 or higher, access is restricted or closed.
- Check the current alert level shortly before you travel and again on Tanna.
- Only visit with an authorized guide and follow their instructions on where to stand.
- Never turn your back on the crater, and do not go beyond markers or ropes.
- Wear closed shoes and a warm layer; the rim can be windy and cold after dark.
- Protect cameras from fine ash and consider a buff or mask if the wind blows the plume your way.
- Visits can be cancelled at short notice if activity increases; build in a spare evening.
Fees and tours
A volcano fee, roughly VT 10,000 per person, goes to the custom landowners and covers the ceremony and guides. Most travelers book a package through their bungalow, which adds the 4WD transfer from their accommodation, often 30 minutes to two hours each way on rough roads. Fly-in day trips from Port Vila also exist but leave very little margin for weather and are far more expensive.

More on Tanna
Tanna rewards at least two or three nights. Many villages follow kastom, the traditional way of life, and some welcome visitors for guided walks and dance performances. You can see Port Resolution, where Cook anchored, the black-sand beaches and blowholes of the east coast, coffee plantations, and the enormous banyan tree in the island's interior. Accommodation ranges from treehouse bungalows near the volcano to small beachfront resorts near the airport. There is limited mobile coverage outside the main areas, so set up an eSIM in Port Vila and expect to be offline sometimes.
Efate and Port Vila
Most visitors arrive on Efate, the island that holds the capital, Port Vila, and Bauerfield International Airport. It has the widest choice of hotels and restaurants and makes a comfortable base.
- Port Vila: the waterfront market, the Vanuatu Cultural Centre and French-influenced cafés.
- Mele Cascades: a series of terraced turquoise waterfall pools just outside town.
- Blue Lagoon: a vivid freshwater-saltwater lagoon with rope swings on the east coast.
- Round-island drive: about 120 kilometers of road taking in beaches, WWII sites and villages.
- Hideaway Island: a marine reserve with snorkeling and an underwater post office.
Espiritu Santo
Santo is Vanuatu's largest island, around 50 minutes north of Port Vila by air, and its main town is Luganville. It is quieter and more rustic than Efate, with some of the country's best beaches and diving.
- SS President Coolidge: a former luxury liner turned WWII troop ship that sank in 1942. It lies close to shore and is one of the world's most famous wreck dives.
- Million Dollar Point: where US forces dumped vast quantities of equipment into the sea after the war; great for snorkeling.
- Blue holes: spring-fed freshwater pools such as Matevulu and Nanda, perfect for swimming.
- Champagne Beach: a famously white, calm beach on the east coast.
- Port Olry and Lonnoc: beautiful beaches with simple bungalows.

Getting around Vanuatu
International flights arrive in Port Vila from Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, New Caledonia and the Solomon Islands. Airline options have changed since Air Vanuatu's financial troubles in 2024, so compare current routes on our flights page. Domestic flights from Port Vila to Tanna (White Grass Airport) and Santo take under an hour, but schedules are limited and can change at short notice. Leave at least a day of buffer before your international departure. On Efate, buses are minivans marked with a B on the number plate; they run flexible routes for a small flat fare within Port Vila. On Tanna and Santo, your accommodation will usually arrange transfers.

Costs, money and when to go
Vanuatu uses the vatu (VT). Expect roughly VT 8,000 to VT 15,000 a night for simple bungalows on Tanna and Santo, and much more for resorts on Efate. ATMs are available in Port Vila and Luganville, but carry cash for Tanna. The cooler, drier months from May to October are the most comfortable; November to April is hotter, wetter and the cyclone season. See our best time to visit guide.
